It was a long ride.

Route 66 Museum

We travelled only a short bit on Route 66 today. After going to Cadillac Ranch, we had to see the "Bug Ranch".

We also visited the Route 66 Museum in Clinton, OK, where we ran into the Norwegian Bike Club that was at the Big Texan, the night before. There must have been 25 bikes.

The museum followed the decades, as Route 66 was built and then decommissioned. I found this post card dated August 18th, 1928(the same day of our visit, but 80 years earlier) of a bridge somewhere between Kingman, AZ and Needles, CA.

The Big Texan

We left Santa Fe and we have been on the road all day. We did get a late start, but have been going pretty steady with gas stops and a stop for a cup of soup in Tucumcari. This is a sign from that town.

We found out we were at the midway point of Route 66 on our way back onto 40 after a gas stop. The midway point is in Adrian, TX.

Right before Amarillo, we had to stop at the Cadillac Ranch. We trenched through some mud to get these pics.

So we were pretty hungry when we rolled into Amarillo. We were going to cab it to the BIG Texan, but it turns out they run a FREE LIMO service from all the hotels along US 40 in Amarillo.

I don't have any pictures of The BIG Texan SteakRanch, but you can check out the history of the place here:

Get your Kicks on Route 66

After standing on a corner, we hit the road again. We have been on and off Route 66. The road is slow and it's not well maintained.

We ended up taking it into Albuquerque and hit the crossroads. It's the only spot where Route 66 crosses itself. The "new" route crosses the pre-1937 route.

I took control for a short time today, while Mark took pictures of himself.

What's that stuff in the air?

So we escaped the heat and got sprinkled on near Pine. We stopped to put our rain gear on so it would not rain. You know once you are prepared for rain, it won't rain.

An hour later, Mark says, "What's that stuff in the air?" Of course he could see it, but not feel it. The stuff was RAIN!

The rain didn't last long.
